Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as Secretary of Health, fired all existing members of the CDC's Advisory Panel on Immunization (ACIP) in June to restore public confidence and reduce conflicts of interest[1]. The panel was subsequently reconstituted with new members in line with its views on vaccine safety, transparency and scientific rigor[1]. Among the new members are gynecologists Dr. Adam Urato, a specialist in maternal and fetal medicine, and Dr. Kimberly Biss of St. Petersburg, Florida[1][3]. In January 2026, the CDC under Kennedy revised the childhood immunization schedule, reducing the number of universally recommended vaccines from approximately 17 to 11[1][4]. Vaccines against influenza, rotavirus, hepatitis A and B, some meningococcal and RSV are no longer generally recommended, but fall under joint decision-making or only for risk groups[1]. A panel recently decided that hepatitis B does not need to be given to all newborns, but that parents should consult a doctor and delay the series until at least two months of age[2]. Major health systems and doctors ignore the new calendar and stick to the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines[4]. States have the power to regulate mandatory vaccines for schools, for example, Florida has repealed school requirements[4].
