The European Medicines Agency (EMA) confirms that the use of paracetamol during pregnancy remains unchanged in the EU and is appropriate for the treatment of pain or fever if clinically necessary.[2][5] A recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in The Lancet confirms that there is no increased risk of autism, ADHD or intellectual disability in children.[1][3][7] The analysis included 43 of the highest quality studies involving hundreds of thousands of pregnant women and found no association.[3] A large amount of data from the EU does not report the risk of birth defects in the fetus or newborns.[2][5] In 2019, the EMA reviewed studies on neurodevelopment in children and the results were mixed with no proven link.[2][4] Paracetamol is recommended in the lowest effective dose, for the shortest possible time and as infrequently as possible.[2][5][6] EMA and national authorities continue to monitor the safety of the drug.[2][4][5] Pregnant women should consult a doctor.[2][5]
