The study investigated the relationship between uric acid, inflammatory markers and aging of blood vessels in people with different cardiovascular risks in Lithuania and Spain. The research included 1,546 participants with an average age of 56, of whom 53% were women, 41% had hypertension and 20% had diabetes. The researchers measured aortic stiffness using pulse wave velocity and examined the association with uric acid levels and C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation. The results showed that uric acid was associated with greater vessel stiffness in Swedish men and Lithuanian women, while the inflammatory marker was associated with a stiff aorta only in Swedish men. In Spanish women, the association with uric acid was opposite. The study concluded that uric acid and inflammatory markers are associated with vascular aging, but their predictive value varies by gender and country of origin.
