Public health officials in Sheffield have blocked plans for a new McDonald's drive-thru restaurant. The reason was the undermining of efforts to combat childhood obesity. The proposed restaurant would be located within walking distance of three elementary schools. A permit would go against Eat Well Sheffield's campaign to promote healthy eating. The restaurant would be within half a mile of 11 other places where children gather, including churches, mosques, parks, playgrounds and a youth and community center with sports facilities. Sheffield Council's planning committee refused the application. McDonald's dismissed those concerns in its counterargument.
