Pregnancy-related stroke is associated with a fivefold increased risk of mortality. According to a nationwide Finnish study, ischemic strokes in pregnancy, although rare, do not mean a favorable short-term or long-term prognosis for the patient. The study followed patients for a median of 17.4 years and found excess mortality. Pregnant patients with stroke had a 5.70 times higher risk of death and readmission in the first year after the event compared to pregnant women without stroke. This increased risk persisted for up to ten years. Patients with stroke during pregnancy had a higher risk of in-hospital mortality and longer length of stay compared to pregnant women without stroke. The incidence of stroke in pregnancy is estimated to be approximately 30 per 100,000 pregnancies.
