A systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of chronic sciatica caused by lumbar disc herniation. The study included eleven randomized controlled trials with a total of 868 participants, mostly from China, who were assessed using the VAS scale for pain and the ODI scale for functional disability. Results showed that acupuncture significantly reduced leg pain intensity compared to control groups (including sham acupuncture, standard care, and conventional acupuncture). Acupuncture also improved patients' functional disability. The results indicate both statistical significance and clinical relevance, which supports acupuncture as an effective intervention in the treatment of chronic sciatica. However, the authors highlight methodological limitations in the existing literature and emphasize the need for future high-quality studies to strengthen evidence-based clinical implementation.
