New research by British, Dutch and Spanish experts has found that the use of ADHD medication among adult women in the UK has increased 20-fold over the past decade. The team analyzed electronic health records from five European countries – Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK – and found that the UK saw the sharpest overall increase in ADHD medication prescriptions. A similar increase in prescriptions was observed in other countries as well. Experts have mixed views on the findings - some hailed them as evidence that a growing number of people with ADHD are seeking the help they need. But others have expressed concern that the increase represents a worrying trend of overprescribing the drugs to patients for whom the benefits of treatment are unlikely to outweigh its costs and risks.
