Guinea-Bissau has suspended plans for a controversial US-funded hepatitis B vaccine trial pending further review by national authorities.[1] The study is being led by the Bandim Health Project at the University of Southern Denmark with a grant from the CDC.[1] In Guinea-Bissau, where the poverty rate is 60%, children are vaccinated against hepatitis B at 6 weeks of age, but there are plans to vaccinate newborns at birth.[1] The study compares mortality in the first six weeks of life between infants vaccinated at birth or in the first week and those not vaccinated.[1] In addition, it examines the incidence of atopic dermatitis by 2 years of age and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism by 5 years of age.[1] The study may delay vaccination in up to 7,000 newborns.[2] HHS officials say the study has not been canceled and is proceeding as planned.[1]
