People with rheumatoid arthritis face a significantly shortened working life. Research has shown that up to 72% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis are not employed, while of those who were employed in the past, up to 58.6% stopped working due to rheumatism[1]. Less than a third of patients are employed by someone else or in their own company[1]. The average age of patients who were forced to leave work early was 37.3 years[1]. With a 10-year duration of the disease, 50% of patients are permanently unable to work [1]. Rheumatoid arthritis can shorten a patient's life by five to ten years[4]. Nevertheless, doctors emphasize that with a well-controlled disease and biological treatment it is possible to live a full life[4].
