Type 2 diabetes becomes more dangerous for the heart the longer a person has it. Scientists have found that after a few years, red blood cells can begin to interfere with the healthy function of blood vessels. This deleterious shift was not present in newly diagnosed patients but emerged over time. A small molecule inside blood cells may help provide early warning of rising cardiovascular risk.
