Approximately 15,000 to 16,000 nurses from New York's three largest private hospital chains—NewYork-Presbyterian, Montefiore, and Mount Sinai—are on strike beginning January 12, 2026.[2][3][4][5] This is the largest strike of nurses in the history of the city.[2][3][5] The strike is in its 10th or 11th day and continues as contract negotiations stall.[3][4] Nurses are demanding higher wages, better staffing ratios for safe patient care, better health benefits, pensions and protection from workplace violence.[2][3][4] Hospitals have brought in thousands of temporary workers, closed some beds and are calling union demands unrealistic, including a nearly 40% wage increase.[4][6] Negotiations resumed with Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani in attendance, with Senator Bernie Sanders supporting the strikers at the rally.[3][4] The sisters continue to picket until they reach an agreement.[4]
