Greenland is losing ice, causing global sea levels to rise while its own sea level falls. According to a study published in Science (Volume 391, Number 6783, January 2026), the melting of the Greenland ice sheet is changing the geology of the island. The entire island has shifted more than 40 centimeters to the northwest in the last 20 years[1]. Some areas expand, others contract, resulting in uneven changes in shape and position[1]. The loss of ice from Greenland will contribute to an increase in global ocean levels by 8 to 27 centimeters by 2100[2]. If the entire Greenland ice sheet were to melt, the sea level would rise by approximately 7 meters[4]. These changes affect ocean currents, navigation systems and coastal areas[1].
