An article analyzes the global spread and impact of generative AI on coding, published in the journal Science (Vol. 391, No. 6787, pp. 831-835, February 2026). The study examines who uses AI tools for programming and their impact on developer productivity. According to related surveys by GDC of 2,300 professionals, half of development firms use generative AI, mainly for research/brainstorming (81%), daily tasks (47%) and code assistance (47%).[4] Tools like GitHub Copilot enable creative code in programming languages with human interaction, increasing productivity.[1] However, critics point to risks such as the origin of training data, energy consumption and replacement of jobs, while only 7% of respondents acknowledge the positive impact.[4] Programmers (59%), designers (63%) and artists (64%) show the greatest skepticism.[4] Generative AI makes programming more accessible even for beginners.[1]
