Chemotherapy causes damage to the intestines, which changes the availability of nutrients in the intestine. This changes the composition of intestinal bacteria and increases the level of microbial molecules. This molecule travels to the bone marrow and transforms the production of immune cells. Enhanced anti-cancer defenses make it difficult for tumors to colonize metastatic sites. Patient data show that this change in immunity is associated with better survival.
