The new US Dietary Guidelines and Food Pyramid are published by the US Department of Health and Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture. The overall message is “Eat real food”. They recommend eating the right amount according to individual needs, focusing on whole grains and eating vegetables and fruits throughout the day. They repeat long-standing advice to limit sugars and saturated fat to 10% of calories and sodium to 2,300 mg per day. For the first time, they include limiting highly processed foods, added sugars, refined carbohydrates, dyes, artificial sweeteners, flavors and petroleum-based preservatives. The guidelines call for protein foods to be preferred at every meal.
