New research suggests that auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia may stem from a brain disorder that mistakes internal thoughts for external voices. Normally, the brain predicts the sound of its own inner speech and moderates its response. People who hear voices instead have increased brain activity as if the voice belonged to someone else. This phenomenon explains why inner speech acts like outer sound. The discovery could help scientists develop early warning signs of psychosis.
