Government plans propose that wood burning stoves carry health warnings similar to those on cigarettes or alcohol. Ministers are considering stricter limits on emissions from new stoves, which would reduce the current limit by 80%. These measures only apply to new models. Activists say the plans fall short in protecting the public from health risks. Burning wood has been linked to an increased risk of heart and lung disease, lung cancer, stroke and adverse pregnancy outcomes. It is one of the main sources of PM2.5 fine particles. England's chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, has warned of the growing popularity of wood-burning stoves in cities. In England and Wales, around one in 10 homes is equipped with such a stove.
