Federal agents shot and killed 37-year-old American Alex Jeffrey Pretti, who was a registered nurse in an intensive care unit, on January 24, 2026 in Minneapolis.[1][2] The incident occurred at 9:05 a.m. CST at the intersection of 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue during an immigration operation by Border Patrol agents.[1] According to witnesses, agents entered the restaurant, were refused, Pretti filmed them, helped two people and was sprayed with pepper spray.[1] An analysis by The New York Times reports that agents pacified Pretti on the sidewalk, one hit him with an object, and ten shots were fired within five seconds.[1] According to the Department of Homeland Security, Pretti approached agents with a gun, was sprayed with mace, and agents fired defensive shots after attempting to disarm him.[1] This is the third shooting incident by federal agents in Minneapolis in seventeen days related to anti-ICE protests.[1][2] Hennepin County District Attorney Mary Moriarty called for local police to secure the scene and work with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.[1] Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said DHS blocked local police access to the scene.[1]
