Venezuelan doctors warn of continued repression over serious failures in the country's health system.[1] Doctors and nurses in state hospitals face threats of dismissal from their jobs for publicly speaking out about the lack of medicines and medical supplies.[1][2] Human Rights Watch documented cases where health workers in 10 facilities reported a complete lack of essential drugs such as antibiotics, anti-seizure drugs, and analgesics.[1] In 2015, a third of patients admitted to public hospitals died.[2] More than 13,000 doctors have left the country in the past four years due to lack of equipment and low pay.[5] Medical facilities suffer from a lack of electricity and basic supplies for primary care.[6] Doctors are forced to point to sabotage and economic warfare as the government's narrative to justify repression of critics.[1]
