Chronic inflammation can reshape the colon and increase its vulnerability to early-onset colorectal cancer. The researchers found that colon tissue in younger patients was stiffer, even in apparently healthy areas. These changes suggest that stiffness may occur before cancer occurs. Laboratory experiments have shown that cancer cells grow faster in rigid environments. Colon stiffness may thus contribute to cancer in younger adults.
