A new genetic study suggests that obesity and high blood pressure may directly cause dementia, not just increase the risk of developing it.[1] Researchers analyzed data from large populations in Denmark and the United Kingdom and found that being overweight can harm brain health over time, especially if it leads to increased blood pressure.[1] Research shows that obesity-related changes in the body affect the brain at a young age through lower choline levels, higher inflammation, and metabolic stress.[1] Researchers have identified a clear pattern linking obesity to early signs of neuronal damage that appear decades before symptoms of dementia.[1] Much of the risk of dementia is related to damage to blood vessels in the brain, which affects blood flow and cognitive function.[1] Biological pathways leading to Alzheimer's disease may be active in people with obesity or metabolic stress long before symptoms appear.[1]
