Alzheimer's disease can destroy memory by flipping a single molecular switch that tells neurons to sever their own connections. The researchers found that both amyloid beta and inflammation converge on the same receptor, which triggers the loss of synapses. Neurons are not passive victims, but actively respond to these signals. This mechanism tricks the brain into erasing its own memories. Targeting this receptor could offer a new way to protect memory. Current drugs primarily target amyloid, this approach would bypass it.
