Home fireplaces and wood stoves contribute significantly to winter air pollution, although only a small part of households use them. Wood smoke accounts for more than one-fifth of Americans' wintertime exposure to hazardous fine particles, researchers found. These particles are linked to heart disease and premature death. Much of the pollution drifts into areas where it disproportionately harms people of color. Limiting wood burning would have major public health benefits.
