Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old registered nurse in the intensive care unit at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he treated war veterans, was fatally shot by federal immigration agents over the weekend.[1][3][5] He worked in the ICU for about five years and was a member of AFGE Local 3669.[3][5] According to the US Department of Homeland Security, the agents acted in self-defense because Pretti allegedly approached with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and violently resisted attempts to disarm him.[1][3] However, analysis of the video by CNN shows that the agent took the gun from him just before the shooting.[1][5] Minneapolis police confirmed that Pretti was a legal gun owner with no criminal record.[1][3] The American Nurses Association (ANA) called for a transparent investigation of the incident.[1] Parents and colleagues described him as a friendly and dedicated professional.[1][3][4][5]
