A new method of cardiac regeneration may alleviate the ethical problems of donation due to circulatory death (DCD). This new way of caring for hearts donated after circulatory death has shown promise in a series of cases. The method allows the heart to be cared for until it can be transplanted. Rapid recovery of the heart is a key element of the procedure. The approach has implications for resolving ethical issues surrounding DCD heart harvesting.
