Trust is central to health care, especially in the relationship between clinicians and patients. It is not automatic, but is shaped by actions and decisions during consultations and outside the clinic, for example on social networks. General Medical Council (GMC) guidance states that patients must trust health professionals with their lives and health. The trust equation from The Trusted Advisor serves as a framework for assessing its elements in clinical practice. It is calculated as Trustworthiness = (trustworthiness + reliability + intimacy) ÷ self-orientation. Credibility represents the doctor's expertise, reinforced by a medical degree and GMC registration, including perceived experience.
