Gut microbiota research in functional bowel disorders expanded significantly from 2016 to 2025, with China being the most prolific contributor, followed by the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Australia.[1] Leading research institutions including the Mayo Clinic in the US and University College Cork in Ireland are actively involved in international collaboration in this area.[1] Current research focuses on three main areas: mechanisms by which the gut microbiota affects functional gut disorders through the gut-brain axis, differences in microbiota composition between individual types of disorders, and intervention strategies based on microbiota modulation.[1] High-frequency research topics include probiotics, short-chain fatty acids, inflammatory processes, and the gut-brain relationship.[1] Clinical trials have primarily focused on the role of gut microbiota metabolites in symptom regulation, the application of integrated modulation strategies, and the impact of specific microbiota abnormalities with a precision treatment approach.[1] The bibliometric analysis provided a systematic review of scientific research and identified key areas for future clinical development in the field.[1]
