Medicare may begin covering multiple cancer early detection (MCED) tests after FDA approval. On Jan. 20, the House of Representatives approved a health spending package that includes a provision for such coverage. Currently, Medicare pays for screening for only five types of cancer with an A or B recommendation from the USPSTF: breast, cervical, colorectal, prostate, and lung in at-risk individuals. Unprotected cancers account for nearly three out of four cancer deaths in the US each year. The Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act (S.2085) authorizes CMS to cover MCED tests based on blood, urine, or other specimens upon FDA approval. These tests complement, not replace, traditional screenings such as colonoscopy or mammography. MCED test coverage will not be provided if the patient has been tested in the previous 11 months.[2][1][3]
