During the recent industrial dispute between the BMA and the Government, many doctors commented online that goodwill and public support were no longer priorities for the medical profession. Public approval and an altruistic profession don't pay the bills. Other unions, particularly those for rail workers, continue to demand better pay and conditions despite public opposition. Goodwill is not compensation for wage cuts or unacceptable working conditions and can distract from addressing them. Yet medical practice and the work of the NHS depend on public goodwill. The 2025 Ipsos Loyalty Index showed that doctors, at 85%, were the third most trusted profession, behind nurses and engineers. Journalists reached 26%.
