The UK Government has announced plans to tackle regional inequalities in cancer treatment outcomes. The goal is to train more specialized oncology doctors for coastal and rural areas. The new measures will be part of a national plan to fight cancer, published next week. Specialist training posts in NHS trusts with the biggest staffing gaps are to be funded. The government will work with medical schools to promote specialization in clinical and medical oncology. These steps are intended to end the "postcode lottery" in speed of diagnosis, treatment and outcomes. From April 2027, a new approval process will be introduced to speed up access to cancer tests, devices and digital tools. Early technologies include a "mushroom on a string" test for early symptoms.
