The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released new air pollution standards this month without public comment. The agency will no longer recognize the health benefits of reducing air pollution. It will continue to count the costs to industry of reducing pollution. These costs are supported by 2 years of pollution data. This move favors the interests of polluters. At the same time, it ignores the ways in which air pollution damages or kills communities. By refusing to quantify the health costs, the EPA ignores evidence of pollution's burden on public health.
