Researchers fitted large groups of ice fishermen on different lakes with high-precision GPS tracking devices and head-mounted cameras to study how they decide where to go and how long to stay at a fishing spot. They collected data from 477 hunting routes from 74 individuals, which included more than 16,000 individual decisions. The study showed how people integrate personal, social and ecological information in decisions about spatial searching and leaving hunting sites. Social context has been shown to be a key factor affecting hunting dynamics. Fishers adaptively use social information to locate resources when unsuccessful. In the presence of others, they increase the time before leaving a location, leading to increased concentrated searching in areas of high social density. These findings highlight the importance of sociality to human hunting decisions.[2]
