The article describes a brain drain from US government institutions caused by restrictions on the flow of international talent and significant cuts in funding for research and higher education.[1][3] Scientists have fewer options for long-term projects, obtaining grants, and maintaining laboratories, leading to a hiring freeze at universities and a reduction in postdoctoral positions.[1] A poll of more than 1,600 scientists in the US found that more than 75 percent were considering leaving the country because of these changes.[1][7] These measures threaten both the current workforce and the ability to nurture a new generation of researchers.[1] Universities in Australia, Europe, Asia and especially China attract American scientists with higher funding and better academic freedom.[3][5] An example is the departure of researchers to Canada or France for more stable conditions.[3] This exodus may weaken US economic and technological leadership.[1][5]
