Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old paramedic working in the intensive care unit at a Minneapolis Veterans Affairs hospital, was shot and killed by two federal agents from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) during a street fight.[1][3] The incident took place on Saturday, January 24 around 9:05 a.m. on Nicollet Avenue in the Eat Street neighborhood during an immigration operation.[5][6] Agents tried to detain him, Pretti resisted, the Border Patrol agent yelled "He's got a gun!" several times.[1][3] According to witness videos, Pretti was holding a cell phone when agents tackled him to the ground, and one of them then took a legally held gun from his waistband, shortly after which several shots were fired.[1][3][4] Local Minnesota investigators filed a lawsuit against the federal government to prevent tampering with evidence and were not allowed to the scene.[2][6] Federal agents are temporarily off duty, with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCA) conducting the investigation.[6][7]
