The United States officially withdrew from the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 22 or 23, 2026, one year after President Donald Trump's announcement on January 20 or 21, 2025.[1][2][3][4][5] According to the regulations, a year of notice and payment of all debts is required to completely terminate the membership.[1][3][5] However, the US defaulted on its membership for 2024 and 2025, incurring a debt of between $260 and $278 million.[1][5][7] A WHO spokesman said that member states would investigate the terms of the US withdrawal at the council's February meeting.[1][7] The US previously provided approximately 15-20% of the WHO budget.[2][5] The WHO declared that withdrawal was not complete without payment of debts.[5] Experts warn that the move will disrupt the global health system, including virus surveillance.[1][5]
