According to the UN, the humanitarian situation in Yemen will worsen significantly in 2026 due to growing food insecurity and a decrease in international aid.[1] Julien Harneis, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, said 21 million Yemenis are currently in need and aid is drying up.[1] Last year, 19.5 million people needed humanitarian assistance, while the UN plan was only 28 percent funded, or $688 million.[1] Food insecurity is growing, especially on the Red Sea coast, and the health system, supported by the UN and the World Bank for the past 10 years, will no longer be adequately funded.[1] Yemenis will be highly vulnerable to epidemics this year, and the situation may go unnoticed until mortality and morbidity increase significantly.[1] The United States, by far the largest donor, has significantly reduced foreign aid under President Donald Trump.[1] The conflict has been ongoing since 2015, when the Houthis took control of northern Yemen, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths and a major humanitarian crisis.[1]
