Researchers in Bangladesh identified the bat-borne Pteropine orthoreovirus (PRV) in five patients who were initially suspected of having Nipah virus infection but tested negative.[2] Patients exhibited Nipah-like symptoms including fever, vomiting, headache, fatigue, and neurological symptoms.[2] All five patients experienced a severe course of the disease.[2] Genetic analysis by sequencing confirmed the presence of PRV in archived throat samples, and live virus was cultured from three samples, demonstrating active infection.[2] Researchers have identified genetically similar orthoreoviruses in bats caught near patients in the Padma River basin area.[2] The finding suggests that PRV should be included in the differential diagnosis of Nipah-like diseases in Bangladesh, as less severe cases in the country may go undiagnosed.[2]
