Alzheimer's disease shuffles memories while the brain rests. When the brain rests, it usually replays recent experiences to reinforce memory. The researchers found that in Alzheimer's-like mice, this replay still occurs. However, the signals are mixed and poorly coordinated. As a result, the brain cells that support memory lose stability. Animals therefore try to remember where they were.
