A study evaluated the combined efficacy of Drakshaguduchyadi Kavala gargle and Khadiradi Vati lozenges in radiotherapy-induced xerostomia in patients with head and neck cancer. Xerostomia is a common side effect of radiotherapy that impairs oral health and quality of life, while existing options provide only temporary relief. Patients took Khadiradi Vati lozenges and Drakshaguduchyadi gargle three times a day for 30 days. Subjective symptoms such as dry mouth, difficulty in chewing, swallowing, feeling of suffocation, sticky saliva, impaired enjoyment of food and others were significantly improved as assessed by the xerostomia questionnaire and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Objective parameters – unstimulated and stimulated saliva flow measured by sialometry and saliva pH – showed a statistically significant improvement according to the paired t-test. The authors concluded that these Ayurvedic preparations can be considered as a treatment option for radiotherapy-induced xerostomia. The study is registered under the identifier CTRI/2019/12/0223.[1]
