The study analyzed 108 educational videos on TikTok about congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, a common eye condition in young children that can lead to neonatal dacryocystitis if left untreated. Videos had a median duration of 48.5 seconds and median interactions of 68 likes, 8 comments, 13 favorites and shares. Of these, 57.4% were recorded by health professionals and 16.7% by non-profit organizations. Two ophthalmologists rated the videos according to DISCERN, a global quality score and audiovisual material rating tool for patients. Videos from nonprofits and healthcare professionals had significantly higher DISCERN scores (59.22 and 50.00 vs. 37.50 and 19.40), global scores (4.5 and 4.0 vs. 3.0 and 1.0), comprehensibility (84.62% vs. 73.08 and 53.85%), and actionability (75.00% vs. 53.85%). 66.67 and 50.00%) versus non-medical individuals and for-profit firms (all P < 0.001). Spearman analysis showed no correlation between quality and engagement, only a weak correlation between video length and some quality indicators (r = 0.17–0.21, P < 0.05). Nonprofit organizations and healthcare professionals are creating more reliable and understandable videos.
