Psychedelics Researchers of psychedelic substances often have personal experience with their use, which creates ethical dilemmas regarding transparency.[1] According to a 2023 survey, many therapists consider their personal use of psychedelics relevant to informed consent and patient preparation.[1] In one sample, 88% of 32 psychedelic therapists had personal experience with classic psychedelics and related hallucinogens.[2] Among 111 psychedelic researchers in an academic setting, 85% of respondents had personal experience with classic psychedelics.[3] They see these experiences as beneficial to research, but also a potential source of bias, and recognize the need for self-reflection and disclosure.[3] Personal use predicts more positive views about the potential of psychedelics to improve well-being, transform society, solve the ecological crisis, and answer spiritual questions (regression β = 0.3–0.5, p < 0.01).[3] The proposed solution is "scoped transparency", a middle way between secrecy and full disclosure, where personal experiences are shared through institutional channels such as conflict of interest forms or ethics committees to minimize the risks of bias and influence on study participants.[1]
