Freezing temperatures and power outages create dangerous health situations because the cold exhausts the body and overloads the heart.[1] Wear multiple layers of loose, light, warm clothing instead of one heavy layer, gloves instead of mittens, and a warm woolen hat.[1] Don't drive your car unnecessarily and lower the temperature in your home to save fuel, heating only the spaces you use.[1] Close doors, curtains, and cover windows and doors with blankets to keep in warmth.[1] Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia, such as slurred speech, disorientation, uncontrollable shaking, staggering, drowsiness, and a body temperature of 35°C or lower.[1] In the event of a power outage, wear layers of warm clothing, hats, gloves, and blankets indoors and gather in one room with the door closed.[1] If you're stuck in your car, stay inside, use your hazard lights, and run the engine and heat for 10 minutes every hour with the window slightly open.[1]
