According to an international study group, modifiable risk factors account for nearly 40% of the global cancer burden. Based on data from 2022, an estimated 37.8% of the 18.7 million cancer cases are related to these factors. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most difficult oncological diseases to detect in its early stages. Lifestyle significantly affects risk because several underestimated factors often combine in one person. The main risk factors include smoking, excess body weight, patterns of diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, alcohol and hereditary susceptibility. The risk gradually decreases after quitting smoking, but it takes years. Excess body weight has an impact that has been underestimated for a long time. Inherited mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes significantly increase the risk in some families.[1]
