During aging, cells not only wear out, but also reorganize. The researchers found that the cells actively remodel the endoplasmic reticulum, reducing protein-producing areas and preserving fat-related areas. This process is driven by ER-phagy. ER-phagy is associated with longevity and healthy aging. Changes in the endoplasmic reticulum happen early. These changes can trigger later diseases. At the same time, they offer a chance to stop the disease.
