In a pilot project, the state of Utah is testing the use of autonomous AI to refill drug prescriptions for patients with chronic diseases without real-time physician involvement. By partnering with Doctronic, Utah became the first US state to approve AI to legally participate in regulatory decision-making. The program operates in the Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy's regulatory sandbox and evaluates clinical safety, patient satisfaction and effectiveness in practice. Prescription refills account for approximately 80% of all drug activity, and nonadherence is a major cause of predictable health problems. AI enables patients to renew prescriptions in minutes, reducing delays and making work easier for both doctors and pharmacists. The pilot monitors the timeliness of medication refills, adherence, safety, workflow efficiency and costs. The findings will be published to inform future policies at both the state and federal levels.
