The UK government is considering reclassifying ketamine from Class B to Class A under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. The tiered drug classification system is intended to discourage the use of the most harmful substances and direct law enforcement and health resources proportionately. This system is a legal framework, not a health strategy, and aims to reduce the availability and demand for drugs. However, it did not lead to better health outcomes or a reduction in mortality. The classification is recommended by the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) based on evidence, but the final decision rests with the government. Ketamine was first classified as a Class C substance in 2006 and reclassified to Class B in 2014. Reclassification alone, according to the title of the article, will not reduce the harm.
