During a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing, Democrats accused the Trump administration of weakening the fight against fraud, waste and abuse in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.[1] According to them, the administration targeted blue states, including Minnesota.[1] The hearing was held on February 3, 2026, entitled "Common Schemes, Real Harm: Examining Fraud in Medicare and Medicaid".[3][5] Witnesses included Jessica Gay of Integrity Advantage, Kaye Lynn Wootton of the National Association of State Medicaid Fraud Control Units, Stephen W. Nuckolls of Coastal Carolina Health Care, and Jessica Tillipman of George Washington University.[3] The documents mention health care fraud actions in 50 federal districts and 12 states with projected losses exceeding $14.6 billion.[2] Among the schemes was a $10.6 billion durable medical equipment fraud where almost $4.45 billion in payments were stopped.[2] CMS established the Fraud Defense Operations Center in June 2025 to combat suspected fraud.[2]
