Children born to mothers with any subtype of diabetes had an increased risk of epilepsy. A retrospective Canadian study showed this risk during a 10.2-year follow-up. Compared to unexposed children, the risk was higher in children exposed to maternal diabetes. Pregestational diabetes mellitus of type 1 and 2 increases the risk of epilepsy in children. Maternal gestational diabetes also increases the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including epilepsy. The study confirmed an increased risk of a wide range of neurodevelopmental disorders in children of diabetic mothers.[2] Pregestationally diagnosed type 1 diabetes has the most significant impact.[2]
