The WHO and International Agency for Research on Cancer study analyzed data from 185 countries and 36 types of cancer. Most new cancer cases are not caused by modifiable risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol. An estimated 37.1% (7.1 million) of the 18.7 million new cancer cases in 2022 were associated with 30 modifiable risk factors. Tobacco smoking was the main risk factor, accounting for 15.1% of cases (3.3 million), followed by infections (10.2%; 2.3 million). The remaining cases are attributed to inherent factors such as inherited or randomly mutated genes. Scientists emphasize the necessity of reducing exposure to tobacco, certain infections and alcohol to prevent cancer.
