Author Matt Morgan, an intensive care physician, describes his experience of visiting the British Museum in London. In the Enlightenment gallery, he found a Japanese "mermaid" displayed behind glass. It is a small, shrunken figure with an ape-like upper half and a fish tail. It was assembled almost two centuries ago from monkey, fish, wood and papier-mâché. This creation was sent to Europe to amuse or fool the audience.
